This subject always reminds me that if someone wanted to read your book and not pay for it, they’d go to the LIBRARY. Why aren’t these people who are crying about piracy not attacking the library system? I can get DVDs, CDs, records, newspapers, magazines and books for free. How is that different than someone posting their favorite new song on their blog for friends to hear?

Exactly. I found our first book pirated yesterday, and I was so excited! Please! Steal my book and read it and tell all your friends! It is most certainly the same thing as borrowing it from the library.

I’ve pirated books and many of them. Sometimes even though I got it for free I felt it was hardly worth the price. Other times when the author’s next book came out I ran out and bought it because I did not want to wait for someone to post it illegally. As Neil said in the clip, no one lost any sales – the alternative to me “stealing” the book is usually not that I would buy it, but that I would not read it at all.

Secondly, I might have a different view if I had anything worth stealing of my own but any artist who is not excited that people are interested enough to pirate his work might need to let his ego deflate a bit. Your audience may give you their money if they like your work but you have no inherent right to it. They don’t have to pay attention to you at all.

I think being ignored is far worse than piracy for an artist.
