We had a marvelous rehearsed reading last week at the Seven Dials Playhouse! There was a full-house with over 40 people showing up—a mixture of industry professionals including playwrights, actors, producers, and agents. It was great exposure for my first foray into London theatre.
Afterward, I had arranged snacks and wine for my guests, and many stayed to discuss the play in depth. It’s an intense work with strong political and cultural themes, so there was much to talk about! London Playwrights’ script consultant Kimberly Andrews found it “compelling,” “concisely structured,” and “a very powerful piece of theatre.” Even days later people emailed me to express their thoughts. Here is some feedback I received:
‘“Your play is so powerful, it was written so well. I was completely drawn in, the characters felt so real and I think that’s what’s so effective, it almost felt like it wasn’t even a play at points – more of a discussion that I think a lot of people will feel like they have been a part of.” ~Sebastian
“The story was captivating and impactful to me already while I was going through the script, but during the reading it became even stronger. While watching and listening to the performance, I felt like I was being transported into the world of the play, and I was picturing everything happening as if I was watching a full-scale production.” ~Alex
“It is bold, profound carries a strong message and really left me with a question of what is missing NOW in life, so that that does not become our future.” ~Kathi
We even got a review in Fringe UK!
Overall, it was a rousing success, and I look forward to seeing what’s next for Sanctuary—perhaps a fully-staged version later this year or in 2025. That would be wonderful!
